I believe that family portraits, with children, should be fun and candid! Most children cannot stand in front of the camera and smile on command. And if they do, it usually looks much different than their “normal,” smile 🙂 That is why capturing natural smiles is the best way to go. Here are some of the fun and candid family portraits in Sunnyvale of John and his family. As well as some tips on capturing natural images of children.

Kids Are REALLY Ticklish!

One thing that I know about kids is that they are REALLY ticklish! Under their arm pits, their neck, and their stomachs are all great places. Tickling them gets really fun and candid pictures that are completely natural. There is going to come an age where tickling them is not going to be cool anymore. Capturing these fun images, at this time in their lives, is really important 🙂

Have Them Say Something They Really Like

Another way to get kids to give genuine expressions is to have them say something they like. This can be anything from a favorite cartoon character or a sweet treat. Instead of saying, “1,2,3, CHEESE,” I have found that ice cream works much better! I will usually ask them if they like ice cream. Nearly all kids do 🙂 This will usually begin to get a smile out of them. And then I tell them to yell their favorite flavor of ice cream, on the count of three. Right before and right after they yell out their favorite flavor is the perfect time to snap the picture!

For Pictures Of Just The Kids, Parents Can Help Get A Smile 🙂

For images where Mom and Dad are in the picture, I like to use them to get the kids to smile. Dancing and making funny faces usually works really well for this.

Running And Walking Backwards

One thing that kids also really like to do is to run! For these images, I like to set the kids up at the “starting line,” and have them run into Mom & Dad’s arms. These are not only fun moments to capture – but it also lets the kids know that we are just having fun. Once they are having fun, they pretty much forget all about the camera.

Walking, with everyone holding hands, also is a great way to get candid images. Having everyone walk towards me – and then walk backwards can get some really great smiles 🙂

Getting Ideas From Mom & Dad

Last but not least, I LOVE getting ideas from Mom & Dad! John had yellow glasses that the kids really liked and these helped capture some more great images.
