Does A Wall Make A Good Headshot Background?

Frequently Asked Questions: Does a Wall Make a Good Headshot Background?

When it comes to headshots, you have several options for backgrounds. For most instances, I prefer the look of a solid white background. White backgrounds are clean, easily repeatable for companies who take headshots regularly, and white goes well with most outfits. I typically take headshots on a seamless paper background. If this is not an option, does a wall make a good headshot background? Here are a few things to consider when considering using a wall for your headshot background.

A Wall Can Have Great Texture

One of the biggest benefits of using a wall for your headshot background is that a wall can have great texture. Unlike a seamless paper backdrop, some indoor walls and a lot of outdoor walls have texture that can add dimension to your headshots. Keep in mind, that the closer you are to the wall, the more the texture will be noticeable. If you are far away from the wall, it will begin to appear out of focus. Depending on what you are looking for, both options can work well.

Watch Out For Reflections And Shadows

Another thing to figure out, when considering does a wall make a good headshot background, is if there are reflections and shadows. Some walls have reflections that are unavoidable. The reflections can be distracting to the headshot – which is not ideal. Depending on the lighting, walls can also have harsh shadows. Ideally, headshots should be taken in an area with high ceilings. This allows for the light to be about 3 feet above the subject. The higher the light is, the less shadows that will show up on the background. If you do not have high ceilings, sitting in a stool will allow the light to be at the ideal height.

Consider Background Extraction Afterwards

Lastly, if you try using a wall for your headshot background and it just does not work, you can always extract yourself from the background afterwards. Make sure that your Photographer is able to do this and if there is an additional fee to do so. Also, keep in mind that the background is just supplemental to the overall headshot. Striking a confident and approachable pose should be your number one priority 😉
