One of the best ways to celebrate the milestone of graduating high school is by taking senior portraits. Senior portraits can be used to send out invitations for an upcoming graduation party. They can be used to announce your kid’s college choice. And of course, they can be used to document this exciting moment in time for years to come. Here are some examples of recent senior portraits at Oakmeadow Park in Los Gatos. As well as a few quick tips on scheduling senior portraits in the afternoon 🙂

Add In Extra Time To Find Parking

When arriving to your senior portraits, I recommend planning on arriving at least 10-15 minutes before the start of the session. This will allow you enough time to find parking and get to the starting location without rushing. Also keep in mind that certain days and times can be much busier than others. For example, most parks are busier on weekend afternoons, holidays, or if there is an event scheduled there. Just to be safe, I recommend arriving even earlier. If you happen to be running late, make sure to let your Photographer know as much in advance as possible. Depending on their schedule, they may be able to extend the session past the scheduled end time. But on days where they have back-to-back appointments, they may not be as flexible. Arriving early ensures that you’ll get the most out of the session 😉

Locations With A Lot of Open Shade Are Ideal

One of the things I love about taking senior portraits at Oakmeadow Park is that there is a lot of shade. When it comes to lighting, the best time to take outdoor portraits is in the early morning or in the evening. At these times of day, the lighting is typically soft and more flattering than the afternoon sun. However, if your schedule does not permit booking the session in the early morning or evening, shade is your best friend! Shade can provide soft and flattering light. Locations with a lot of trees are ideal for afternoon sessions.

Bring Along A Friend Or Family Member

Lastly, I also recommend bringing along a friend or family member to the session. Whenever possible, I love to capture candid images with friends and family. And I will often ask them questions to get a response that results in natural smiles 🙂 For example, I may ask a parent to give me one word to describe their high schooler.
