The best time to take outdoor portraits is always going to be in the evening โ about an hour before the sun sets. And this is especially the case for beach senior portraits at Shark Fin Cove. To check when the sun will be setting on any given day, I recommend checking a sunset calendar and scheduling your session to end about 10-15 minutes before the sun sets. At locations like the beach, the sun will typically set right over the water. However, other locations the sunset may be blocked by buildings, trees, hills, etc. Showing up early or on time to your session is also very important because when the sun sets, you will start to run out of light. In the hour before the sun sets, you will LOVE the soft, vibrant light that is unique to โgolden hour.โ
Plan On A Short Hike To Get Down To The Beach

One of the things to plan for when planning a session at Shark Fin Cove is that there is a small hike down and back up to access the beach. I recommend bringing comfortable shoes to hike down to the beach. If you or anyone who plans on going to the session has limited mobility, Shark Fin Cove may be a difficult location to get to.
Things To Bring To The Session

Last but not least, here are a few things to bring to the session ๐ Firstly, I would plan on it being a little cooler than normal at this beach. Davenport is typically cold windy, and overcast at certain times of the day. I recommend brining a coat or sweater to keep warm. As well as a brush and mirror is you plan on wearing your hair down for the session. Especially in the evening, the wind can pick up and a brush may be needed so that your hair is how you want it ๐ I also recommend bringing family or friends to the session. They can be included in some of the pictures, they can help carry any props or change of clothes, and they can make you feel a little more comfortable taking pictures.
If you are traveling a long way to get to Shark Fin Cove, I recommend going out to dinner, or a sweet treat after the session as well. Davenport is just a few miles from Santa Cruz โ where there are a lot of great places to visit for dinner or dessert.
